We pay tribute to Béla Bartók on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of his passing. Béla Bartók (1881-1945) was a Hungarian composer and pianist who left an indelible mark on 20th century music. A relentless innovator, Bartók blended East European folk melodies with modern compositional techniques, forging a bold, new musical language. His passionate ethnomusicological research uncovered countless folk music treasures that inspired iconic works like the Mikrokosmos piano pieces and viscerally rhythmic ballet scores. Bartók's uncompromising spirit expanded the boundaries of composition through masterpieces like the String Quartet No. 4 and Concerto for Orchestra. The Grand Maestro honors this true revolutionary whose audacious vision reshaped the musical landscape.
Special Dmitri Shostakovich Category

Participants have the opportunity to showcase their talents by performing any work by Dmitri Shostakovich, selecting pieces that resonate with their artistic vision and interpretive strengths. They may also craft transcriptions of his compositions, enabling adaptations for various instruments or ensembles. In the composition category, applicants enjoy the freedom to choose any piece by Shostakovich and create their own unique transcription, highlighting their creativity and understanding of his distinctive musical language. We eagerly anticipate the participants' performances, interpretations, and heartfelt tributes to Shostakovich’s powerful and evocative works, fostering an atmosphere of artistic exploration and deep appreciation within this competition.

IMPORTANT NOTE: While this competition serves as a tribute to the great Shostakovich, participants are encouraged to embrace artistic freedom and choice of repertoire is not confined solely to repertoire by Dmitri Shostakovich.

Applicants are invited to explore a diverse selection of compositions from various composers, instruments, and genres (not limited to works by Dmitri Shostaokovich). This inclusiveness allows musicians to showcase their versatility and express their unique musical interpretations, contributing to the rich tapestry of this music competition.
